week 9

Week 9 is Formative Assessment Week so you’ll be expected to present all work completed from Week 1 onwards including-

2 x finished illustrations that demonstrate an understanding of Week 7 (i.e. scanning, cleaning & adding colour) and Week 8 ( i.e. adding texture/pattern/swatch layers).

1 x mood board (this should be nearing completion and should exhibit a visual reflection of your designer’s style and your illustration aesthetic).

At least 1 x finished sketchbook and all other supporting drawings from Week 1 onwards including any life-drawing.

* Time slots for formative assessments will be emailed to everyone in due course.

week 8

This week, we’ll be following the below tutorial- a step by step guide demonstrating 2 ways of effectively incorporating texture/pattern/swatch layers into a drawn illustration.

Step 01step-01

To begin with open a scanned texture/material and the image to which you want to apply it.

Step 02step-02

Using the pointer/drag tool (v) drag the texture onto the drawing. Resize if necessary – in this case it’s fine.

Step 03step-03

Copy your drawing by dragging it’s layer to the ‘new layer’ icon at the bottom of the layer tab. Then using the same icon create a new blank layer. Fill this with white and order the layers as shown.

Step 04step-04

You want to be able to see your scanned texture through the drawing. Select the drawing in the layers tab and select a ‘Multiply’ layer blending mode. This makes the white portions of the drawing become transparent – your texture shows through.

Step 05step-05

I want to use the texture to create the chocker. Select the texture layer and use the drag tool (v) to place it where you want.

Step 06step-06

Using the lasso tool (L) create a selection of the area you want to fill.

Step 07step-07

With the texture layer still selected copy and paste your selection (CTRL+C - CTRL+V). This will copy your selection from your scanned texture and add it as a new layer. Turn the original scan layer off to see the results.

Step 08step-08

Now I wanted to use the scanned texture to fill the hair, eyes and lips. I used a different technique.

Turn the scanned texture layer back on and place it over the area you want to fill.

Step 09step-09

Turn the scanned texture layer off and create a new blank layer, as before, and using a brush (B) paint in the areas you want to fill – at this point the colour you use is of no importance. I used bright red for illustrative purposes.

Step 10step-10

Here’s the areas I want filled completely painted in.

Step 11step-11

Turn the scanned texture back on and make sure that it’s now above the layer you just painted.

Step 12step-12

Right click the name portion of the scanned texture (as shown by the green box) and select ‘Create Clipping Mask’. You will see that the texture is now only visible through the area you painted. You can move and amend the texture while it is in this state.

* Simply add multiple layers of texture/pattern to a single clipping mask by repeating this step as many times as you need. Simply use the eye icon to turn the layers on or off to achieve the desired visual effect.

Step 13step-13

Here I’ve used Hue and Saturate (from last week) to amend the colour of both the added areas of texture.
